Make the gift a 100% off product and require customers to add it to their cart

Create an Advanced Discount Code using the Product Discount module that targets the gift product/variant and sets a 100% percent discount. Share the code with customers and instruct them to manually add the gift item to their cart and apply the code at checkout to receive it for free. This uses supported Product Discount functionality (no automatic adding of items or free-gift automation).
