using a tag /collection for backorder and pre-order

We don't want all our items as eligible and have a lot of items to manage. I'm looking to have a way to flag items (maybe using a tag /collection/or some other feature) and doing that flagging through the api in another application. Then your app would make it possible to set items flagged as either preorder or backorder as appropriate when inventory reaches zero.
